The Knights of Rizal expresses its condolences to former Senate President Sir Aquilino “Nene” Q. Pimentel, KGOR.
Born from a political family, he started as a delegate to the 1971 Constitutional Convention. Briefly imprisoned during Martial Law due to his vocal critique of the Marcos government, he lawyered for CBCP’s National Secretariat for Social Action to help the poor being oppressed during Martial Law.
He became Minister of Local Government under President Aquino and ran for senator during the 1987 elections.
As senator, he is the principal legislator for the passage of the 1991 Local Government Code, which advocates greater local government autonomy.
He was also Senate President from 2000 to 2001, when then President Joseph Estrada was impeached. He served as the head of the Impeachment Court together with then Chief Justice Sir Hilario Davide, Jr., KGCR, the KOR Supreme Commander Emeritus.
An active advocate of federalism, he is one of the instrumental persons to help KOR understand the concept of Philippine federalism, regularly invited by the Order for lectures on federalism with now Council of Elders Chairman Sir Renato S. Puno, KGCR.
